The last two summer seasons have started with the Welsh GP, yet here we were in August, in sunshine, on our way to Nelson FTC for GP8. It was a short hop from the midlands and by around 11am we had arrived and were keen to view the course.
Quite simply it was spectacular! Situated in a valley the Nelson ground consisted of varied terrain of which its most impressive feature was the number of streams that meandered through. There was woodland but never dense, open field with well spaced tress, water courses and opportunity to shoot up hill and down into the valley. The area available to the club is vast and offers great potential. What a venue for the Worlds?
Below is one of the many bridges that spanned the streams and in the distance is an extensive area for the zero range.
On my walk I was attracted to lane 9. The shooting position was atop a natural bridge and from here there was a view down a culvert into the main stream where two targets could be found. For me this was the best lane of the GP season so far.Turn through 180 degrees and meet lane 18. The targets here were elevated and slightly sheltered from the field to the left; inevitably reading any wind strength would be tricky.
Target 14 was also magic. It was placed in the middle of a small stream just above where the stream joined its larger cousin. When eyed through a scope the scene was stunning and could easily draw attention away from the matter at hand. My view again but the best target placement of 2009 albeit I missed. It's down there somewhere!!
Whilst walking around it seemed conditions were ideal but the regular dink of upright targets and the associated gasps told another story. There was wind and although never strong its direction was never constant. The far end of the course was exposed and cleverly turned through 180 degrees to continually test the competitors.
Is Dave Schofield trying a new standing technique or is throwing the rifle his best option?
After the morning round two shooters stood three clear of the field on 47, MFTA champion Neil Daniels and David Williams of Quarry.
This well dressed man, Ian Harford, carded a strong 36 which would later win him C grade and place him in a good position to challenge for top honours come Sywell.
Only 4 behind the top guns was A grade leader Ian Stoddart who would have to suffer the afternoon round to see if he was to be denied his first trophy of the season.
The afternoon session started with a briefing from Dorian Falconer who told us of how much rain they'd had recently; but not today. I had the pleasure of shooting with James Osborne and Mick Kelly and I enjoyed the company of Mick's very well behaved dog. The course was a pleasure to shoot and contained a plethora of different tests. The wind which had brought welcome relief when walking the course now became the enemy. The blue skies and hot sun belied the strength of the wind which might gust enough to lose a plate or subside and be followed by disbelief "it stayed straight on me but the grass was bent over ...".
None of the afternoon shooters could challenge the leaders of each grade from the morning except for Brian Samson who took SFT with 35 and Nick Murphy's 33 took the piston class.
So congratulations to Ian Harford, Peter Moore, Ian Stoddart and David Williams. David's success was the first for a Welsh shooter at their home GP since 1992 and was very well applauded by all.
Final congratulation to Ian Stoddart whose consistent performance this season has led him to the top of A grade but without a trophy. He now has that coveted piece of glassware and if he wins the A grade title at Sywell then he might smile!!

Damn it!
It's a good job those guys can run fast!
"Good lord, I want a beer!"
I dunno, it has an honest & heart felt simplicity plus an element of earthy faith that might appeal to Saatchi & Saatchi!
well done Bolt
WOW~!!!!!!!!!!
Phew!!
Infact, I wouldn't mind it as a epitaph.
Is it me, or does anyone else think mmmmm?
I was thinking Stella.
Do you mean get with it Greg and watch the 100m
or
drugs?
both...
I can't watch things & blog, I have to read about this Bolt geeza tomorrow in the paper!
Greg have you ever tried going on two internet sites simultaneously?
1 or 2 looked a bit hyper on the start line.....or were they just vying for a bit of the attention Bolt's getting?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/8167898.stm
there have been several 'hints' from stories, as there has recently been a staggering improvement in Jamacian athletics generally. A bit like the sudden clutch of Chinese athletic world champions a few years ago.
that Jess Ennis is a bit of a babe
and I've just realised, young enough to be my daughter...
Yes, I'm facebooking with Mitch as I type this. But that's......Sport!
facebooking with Mitch, how old are you?
Phil, the rule is half your age plus 7.
I don't know, hats off to Bolt. He has a physical stature I've never seen before. Linford Christie used to say "a good big un will always beat a good little un" and Bolt is big!
That strangely made an odd sense other than my intention.
Was he talking bout his lunch box though?
He said big not huge!
wow, wikipedia is already updated with the new world record, thats quick.
since electronic timing began, the last time the world record was broken by 0.1 seconds was in 1987 by.......
Ben Johnson
You're as sad as me Phil. As soon as she won I looked on Wikepedia to find out what injury had ruled her out last year and it was already showing her win.
I don't know whether thats a compliment or insult
she seems a great prospect, but like most of these show ponies, she needs to stay injury free.
Dean Macey anyone?
Too big.
I'd still prefer a Stells!
That's a 'Stella' Damn these fingers!
I hope to be having a beer in Bilbao very soon.
Stella Sellector!
Where'd Roy go?
I'll be having a pint of Harbour Master soon, followed soon after by another, then....
His chopper has probably recharged. It was San Miguel Selecta, and no I think I'll stick with the normal stuff as Selecta may well impair my walking ability.
Right I'm off for some kip whilst watching the golf.
Blog you guys Thursday night.
I'm here Greg. I have been tempted to use the chopper on a tub of ice cream that was too hard and took far too long to be eatable.
combined clubs cup challenge anyone?
http://www.nefta.org.uk/
Shaun, have a great time and give Jesus and M-C my best wishes.
shouldn't you be marking homework?
I still think the Bisley 80 or Open or whatever looked promising, it's a great ground.
Roy, hot water & a spoon mate - a solution to your deep frozen, Icecream woes!
Where ice cream's concerned there's no such thing as patience.
Will it be tonight??????. The debut??
Evening guys, Greg I will be shooting Sywell Sunday. I go week friday so will miss Bank holiday weekend shooting. Come back Fiday before Masters/showdown
Evening blogsters, what's been happening then?
I was at Black Powder Night at the 49th last night, an influx of newbees all needing a sign off for their BP meant a wait for the one club revolver which then broke, generous club members saved the evening but a purchase will have to be made next year I think!
Well I have now witnessed a strip down of my gun. Imagine the havoc I can now cause.
Well, I was expecting Shaun to be online from Euskadi tonight but as it is nearly 10.30 there & well past his bedtime I think he has lost the window of opportunity, too much San Miguel I fear, "No mas cervaza, por favor! I must walk the hills tomorrow."
Any bits left over Phil?
Sure you will manage it m8, pretty easy really innit
Hi Jonta, haven't changed your mind have you?
Evening bloggers.
Today we are two bloggers in the same line!!!!!!!
Shaun and myself
What new Greg?
its pretty easy at the moment while its fresh in my head.
Lets see in a couple of months when I've been to bed a couple of times.
And thanks for doing that.
No rust or gunk in there, but worried about the teeny weeny hammer now.
Hi Jesus & Shaun, San Miguel flowing well?
Hola Phil,
mucho beer consumed, gracias.
It´s Shaun by the way!
Ermmm dont know Greg....
Only kidding will be bringing it with me saturday mucker
you sound different from abroad
Greg, I'm quite prepared to strip it down for you now. It'll shoot sweet as a nut, and be much lighter after I've finished.
There are soooo many parts in there that are unnecessary.
Evening the two Amigo`s, how is the weather. We go week Friday
Jonta, they are m3 starlock washers.
I'll ask in our maintenance tomorrow
Evening everybody.
Wigan 0 Wolves 1
I knew if I threw a bit of bait on the water I'd get a bite, Holá muchachos! How's the walking?
There wouldn't be any bother in a S400 carbine getting around a 50 shot Course would there?
Always someone to lower the tone.
Evening Roy.
Sounds good Phil.
Hola Jonta the weather is perfecto,
Today we climbed a mountain that was 1718 metres high; phew!
We saw some huge eagles.
I can lower the tone even more than that Jonta.
Walsall 1 Leeds 2
Evening Greg, I used a S400 carbine for my first GP season and had no problems. However, I think 50 shots is close to its limit.
What kind of Eagles?
There's a bloke on the SA forum asking if he'll have to carry his bottle around with him at the Worlds, made me think.
Sounds good Jesus. What's on the agenda for tomorrow?
Eagles - Imperial or Golden.
Roy an excellent result; what does that say about the Villa?
This is confusing, Shaun, put alittle 'S' before you post so we know it's you.
Hi Roy.
Tomorrow Tesla mountain!
Its's located quite close of Medina, so we'll have enough time to make a BBQ, I think, after we were to the swimming pool.
I've just been watching a bloke on the telly moving Sea Eagle 'chicks' & they were about two foot high!
Jesus, I'm amazed at your grasp of the Premier League scene.
Greg, I think it will be not neccesary, because the difference with the English is evident!
So it's up at 0500hrs to get up it before the heat?
Yes but he has been on the beer!!!!!
I agree Mr C, that is what I presumed.
Signor De Bolivia, have you spoken to Paul today?
Hi all, I'm off to the Greyhound tomorrow with Karl.Meeting at 10 if anyone else fancies it.
Roy, if you want to I can make it Friday evening as well
Swifty, if you read this, Jonta has got your pellets. He will hand them over on Sunday.
Greg you putting scope on saturday, then check zero. Ready for Sywell
News from Spain: Shaun and Ev are going to sleep so they are very tired.
Not a lot of time to rest in the swimming pool and neither at home, so we were visiting Medina de Pomar vilage this afternoon.
Shaun has took his EV?
I thought there wasn't time for shooting?
Evening Paul. I'll see you there at 10 but I have to be away by 2 at the latest.
So, he's got Ev and EV2, that's handy.
Jonta, I think I'll finish the season with Trudy & then swap stuff over the following week, cautious by nature me!
whats all this practice, thats cheating surely?
Was there cider at Medina De Pomar, Mmmmm cider!!!!!!!
Hi Paul, you know how to rub it in don't you! I'll be starting my daily toils about then!!!!
Probably (almost certainly) won't be able to shoot on Saturday Phil, so I've got to test my Ian induced modifications.
Jonta, do you want a copy of the parts list and diagram?
If you do, send me your email addy on bbs.
just do it Greg, Daz swapped over last week and he is in AA which is alot more of a challenge
Ian induced mod, whats that, you don't smile now?
Phil whats your username on bbs
300
my username is phil_g not 300
It's not 300, it's Saddler!
its saddler on agf and stb, not bbs.
I like to stay a man of mystery
Jonta, it's a sentimental thing, end of an era & all that!
Roy I have to leave about then anyway
so thats fine. Do you want to meet up somewhere or are you OK.
Greg I'm sure you could manage a little more time shooting!
....plus there's probably a Saddler already there!
Hamster 2" further forward. Butt hook pushed right in. Reduces the waggly bit at the front. The only problem is that it's still the same old waggly bit at the back.
Frightened to damage her now mate!
Check bbs inbox Phil see if I have sent it to the right geezer. The one that came up did not have the dash init
I thought you delt with your waggly bits with duct tape & blue tac?
wrong one. he's Phil G
I'm Phil_G
Thanks Paul, but it'd prob be easier if I made my own way there. Black Horse Road, Bedworth isn't it?
Nighty night bloggers.
I need to rest a little too, so tomorrow will be a hard mountain day.
Buenas noches a todos.
Sutton Stop Roy.
I thought you'd keep that to yourself Greg.
Hasta luego amigo.
is that Jesus or Shaun saying goodnight? goodnight to both of you.
Well, the burning question of the week is...........WHERE IS IAN?
Not sure Roy.Call me if you need to.
Hi Phil G.
It's Jesus, so Shaun it's going to bed since 15 minutes more or less.
I'm surprised he's up this late!
have a look on stb, cannot see you on the bbs Phil
Yes, Greg.
He is "catching" Spanish manners.
Good night everyone
try that Jonta
Goodnight y buenas noches. I'm away too.
And from me. I can dream about Wolves winning the Premier League!!!!
Why no report from the Greyhound yet?
Good day at Greyhound today in the company of Karl & Paul. Excellent covered plinking range. 10 active lanes with 4 targets per lane. There are several other lanes so that layout can be changed periodically. Good weather, interesting breeze, and a very nice canal-side pub for apres shoot.
maybe they're still in the pub
I was just typing it out to start the proceedings and you come on asking awkward questions!!!!
so its effectively a 40 shot course?
Yes. it'll be interesting to see how it copes with the WL.
how do you mean? you think it will struggle? why? is it small, a field, a forest?
Evening guys. Phil got email it is the same one I looked at on the Steyr website.. Diagrams little jaded.
I got 3 of those starlock washers, thats all they'd got at work.
I don't know Phil. The shooting area is probably about the same as MR, but I can't see there being the same potential for target placement. It may be different with no leaves on the trees. I hope I'm not being over critical.
http://www.steyr-sportwaffen.at/siteLayout.php?middlePart=2522293e87ff4e6bb7992247def3cb4e
some of the other 110 version parts lists, like the match or benchrest, and even the 100 are a bit clearer
Phil Your company must have placed an order with a supplier at some time, could you find out.
What a day shooting ended up going around the Greyhound course 3 times dropped 5 targets in total Thaks for the company Roy and Paul it was very nice. ended the day leaving at 18.30pm with a Shiny AA pro-target nickel plated and Hydrographics stock ( walnut burr ) bling or what.. Are you going on Friday evening Roy to the greyhound..
Hi Jonta , what size starlock washer do you require as we use them alot at my place of work..?
Hi karl Phil as the sizes and part number. Will have to go know battery low to tired to dig lead out. See you all the weekend
they are to fit on a m3 dowel, the ones used in the Steyr.
We could do with some to replace the ones that you have to remove to strip the gun.
Listen to me, like I've ever stripped down my gun.
I mean a 3mm dowel
I know where I can buy some, but who wants to buy them?
I don't think I'll be able to make Friday evening Karl.
Karl, what are your thoughts on Greyhound as a WL venue?
Some bad news tonight concerning the proposed search for potential land.
I was at the 49th tonight & one of the chaps there said his wife was in negotiations with a Farmer for an acre of land for her horse, apparently you are looking at around 10,000 AN ACRE! That's if you can find anyone to sell you any. When I told this fella our plan there was much teeth sucking & shaking of heads.
Although we wouldn't necessarily be wanting to buy, there is a slight difference in the type of land we'd be pursuing because we'd be looking for land which couldn't be used for grazing or agriculture and which would neither be of use nor a source of income for the land owner
Hi, The greyhound will be fine as a winter league venue, harder than you think due to there being less leaves and the grass being shorter..Given a good wind it will sort out the men from the boys..I know plenty of farmers who have areas of shrubland and trees where they would be more than willing to let out due to they get no income from that sort of area/ terrain. the problem lies in you need to be close to the A5/M6/M54 corrider and near to our current location. also you need good access, parking, all year around..Also you got to consider tiolets, ladies are now coming to our shoots and we have to think of their digity..
Other things to take in to consideration is will they let us site a container, leave a plinking range out . then there alot of things to buy.. the key to starting a club is to find somewhere where you have the tiolets and parking and access look at what we have got already good access, tiolets , catering, parking, close to the motorways and main roads..so why move ?...
Which is why we can't just have the use of some land, it'll have to be ours by purchase or lease otherwise there is little point.
Jamacia just gone top of the medal table above the US. *rubs chin*
Evening chaps. We had a fantastic time with Jesus.
Just watched Bolt, wow wow wow!!!
All the criteria for a suitable shooting ground are already well documented, but I don't believe - as nice as it would be - that it would be necessary to own the land. It's my understanding that Emley, for instance, doesn't own the land. Far Coley doesn't.
Just say for instance, a suitable area was identified, the owner stipulated the price, and we could between us afford to pay for it, the associated legal fees, maintainance of access etc, and who knows what upkeep. Then, just say, the club folded and we tried to sell it. Apart from to another FT club, who else would buy land of no agricultural or other commercial value.
Karl, the reasons for moving are that it is my understanding that the concensus amongst club members is that they would welcome the opportunity to have a permannent store/club room, and a facility that could be used by the members during the week, the financial benefits that could accrue, and be free from the threat of an enforced move due to the sale of land for development.
Welcome back Shaun. What news from Euskadi?
Evening Roy.
I'll be back a little later to chat!
3 points each - not bad
Evening once again; anyone chatting?
Tell us about your trip.
Hi gents,
How you all keeping? well I hope.
Phil, Hope to be at Sywell Sunday? I have had a set back with health but fingers crossed. Hope this does not cause you a problem.
Hi Swifty, no problem to me mate, the pellets are yours whenever you want them. Jonta will have them with him on Sunday if you're there.
Evening Steve, Sorry to hear about your setback. It'd be nice to see you there even if you couldn't shoot......if you could stand it.
Just received this from North Oxon:
"Just to confirm that our Open FT this year will be held on 27th September 2009 at WESTON WOODS.
It will be a 50-shot course. Trophies will be awarded in all grades 1-3 including SFT. Entrance £10 including Bonus Bulldog & raffle. More details will be on our website www.northoxonftc.org in due course."
Hi all, nice to hear from you Swifty, welcome home Shaun. Is that everybody covered?
Day one - arrived on the same flight that we had taken so a little tired. Jesus' holiday home is in Medina de Pomar which is about 80km from Bilbao; it is not in the Basque Country but in the province of Burgos. After arriving at his home and meeting Marie-Carmen and her mother and his beautiful dog called "Roy", we went to his friends to swim and enjoy beer and Paela. After siesta we went to a vilaage called Frias which has a very old castle and church and the houses have been re-built in the old style. Then to bed!
Day two - after breakfast we set off to climb the Castro Valnera; a height of 1718 metres. (Snowdon is about 1085m). The climb was very rewarding and the views spectacular. It was great to see Jesus and Roy walk as a pair.
We descended took a beer or two then went swimming and had an excellent lunch. Siesta over we headed in Medina de Pomar to visit the casle and its museum, we then had beer. Dinner followed and then very tired we slept.
Day three - off to Sierra La Tesla. Although the peaks of the Tesla range are lower than Valnera the climb up was more difficult and we started at a lower altitude. I have climbed many UK mountains but this wasa complete new experience. We climbed up and then down, through valleys and dry river beds. We reached the top, Pena Corva at 1332m, after about 3 1/2 hours. Up there we found Griffon Vultures by the dozen, to watch them fly at eye height and some time from above was stunning; they are massive. We also saw the less common Egyptian Vulture. We walked alone the tops for over an hour before descending to Jesus' Jeep. All of this was in the company of Roy who covered at least 4 times the distance that we did.
Home to the pool and pork, lamb, black pudding et al; superb!!!
I missed mt siesta due to a good book and then we went to Villecayo. Here we saw how the river bank had been converted to a beach and used as a swimming pool, there was also a bar. Back home and some supper before a beer on the terrace and off to bed.
This is a very concise summary of an amazing three days.
Jesus, thank you!!!!!!!!
Arby, Will pull out all the stops to make sure I can shoot.
Went to club last Sunday and had great time, it was nice to see the lads and get some shooting done.
"Paid for it since"!!!!.
Hope to get docs ok on Friday to shoot so fingers crossed.
Will be nice to catch up with you gents also.
Roll on the Winter League.
Shaun, sounds like you didn't really enjoy it then?
Evening Steve, evening Phil. Yes fantastic, just my sort of holiday.
Steve are you morning or afternoon on Sunday?
Mmmmm, Black Pudding!
Shaun,
That sounds like a fantasic 3 days,
and Jesus sounds like a great host.
I was down for a PM shoot but changed so could travel with Purley lads as they are shooting AM.
Hi, Greg.
Sounds like a great trip. I hope "Roy" was as well behaved and obediant as me. He probably shoots better than me though.
Evening blogsters.
Shaun, I hope Ev and you arrived ok at home.
After the fog desapeared the sun was shining and we had very good day with temp lower than yesterday.
Then I was to keep an eye on the field competition for the next sunday.
Good synthese of the three days, as usual in you.
Well, I hear he likes peeing up trees aswell!
Holá Jesús, you looked after my boy then, you won't get rid of him now!!!!!
Can I ask what type of dog it is. Am I a rotweiller or a poodle?
Now, the other day I had a mail from a guy at H & N asking if I (we) would like to try some of their products. I have received today some sample pellets, tins of 100.
There are 4 tins of each of 4.51 and 4.52 field target in 8.64 grain, some 4.51's and 4.52's in 10.6 grain (Baracuda match) and some Diablo pellets made from copper.
If anyone would like to try some, the only prerequisite is that you fill in their website with your comments on how they performed.
You wanna get Jonny D on that!
Hi Roy.
"My Roy" is obedient as a blind, point the woodcoks as a marbre figure and then ......I fail the shoot.
Sometimes looks like he would like to carry the gun instead of my.
Oh dear Jesus check the score!
Hi swifty , hope you got that pound we bet on at the start.. It will be nice to see you on sunday..along time overdue..yes and roll on the winter league.. Thanks for the reply Roy to my earlier comments. I understand some of the reasons and agree with the cabin/container idea, but again it has to be the right plot of land to lease/hire I dont mind putting some money into setting up a new millride base if its the right place.
Senór Da Bolivia, the results are up for H2H9, 102 to 93, we are a sandwich with a Shaun filling, Urgh! I don't like that image at all!!!!!
Holá Jesús, hope you are fine .karl
My Roy is a Setter England red and white

Karl,
Pound will be in pocket awaiting collection. What time you shooting Sunday?.
Our Roy is mostly white!
Greg, i can make those scores read what you want, know what i mean...
We've only seen Roy's head and arms Greg.
Hi Karl, thanks. As you can see we enjoy some days together with Shaun&Ev.....without airguns. It means there are a lot of possibilities to enjoy, not only the FT.
Will we meet on European?
.....and I'm keeping it that way Shaunie!!!!
Good night gents.
Seeya Steve mucker!
See ya Steve. Hope you're there on Sunday.
greg, looks like i'd made a few errors, updated score for h t h now uploaded

hi Shaun,Are you back from Spain.. gave that paperwork from Andy calpin to Ian reguarding the Clubs challenge if you want to see it..
roy, looks like you've got a job on to beat greg now.
Greg & Shaun, I'm keeping my best bits to myself.
"meat in the sandwich" Do you mean like Spam?
Karl, I think it's a matter for club discussion and the blog shouldn't really be a place for it. Would welcome the opportunity to open up the debate though
I want 400!
