A trip east

It was an early start for the journey to Iceni; memories of the Millride wind and rain were soon forgotten as we drove east into blue skies and warm sunshine.
The Iceni ground was superb. It consisted of a field and acres of beautiful mature English woodland. The clear skies meant that it was sun bathing weather in the open and the woodland canopy offered shelter and a cooling breeze was very welcome.A walk of the course revealed that conditions were very favourable for high scoring. There was enough wind to cause problems though, particularly the six targets positioned in the field. This St George Cross occasionally opened to show the word Iceni, it spent much of the day moving from left to right and offered help and confusion to the watching competitors.
Everybody was revelling in the glorious weather. Here are a couple of spring boys enjoying the summer climate.
And these two are relaxing between lanes.
Michael G Cotter sticks to business and bags a pair of kneelers.
The morning scores were high lead by Andrew Gillott and Simon Ayres who both dropped only two, also congratulations to Mick Woodhead for an excellent 47 which would win him A grade. After a quick refill, Greg you look guilty, it was time for the afternoon round and off we set.The sounds of falling targets echoed around the wood and in every direction smiling faces finally buried the Millride demons. The course was excellent; it offered plenty of targets that every shooter might expect to get and some to challenge the very best shots. I really enjoyed being in this woodland, a cuckoo could be heard calling and many other birds offered their song. There was some wind but the trees and ferns protected many of the targets that was until I found lane one. It consisted of a 40 yarder low in the grass and a 50 yarder high up on a cage. I missed the low shot with my pellet taking about a kill and a half of wind, I moved to the high target to find it virtually paintless and all I could do was remove a bit more! I wasn't alone in missing as James Osborne also dropped this one on his way to an outstanding 49.
A first class day out and many thanks to the Iceni team for their hard work. It's back to Newbury in two weeks time; let's hope for more of this weather!

Evening all. A GP weekennd beckons and the tension mounts.

Phil_G said...

Roy, don't mention that, like me, you've got a St**r. Shaun's still a bit tender about it all.

CB Chairman said...

Don't "Rock the boat" or you'll get a vote of no confidence.

Evening Roy where y'been?

Baltipal said...

Shaun, you still here? I may have snaffled a pair of Yale padlocks for the guncases, you interested?

CB Chairman said...

Define "snaffled"

Phil_G said...

define "may have"

Baltipal said...

I may have made a connection to someone who can obtain, entirely legally but gratis, Yale padlocks that will fit our guncases. He says he can get two pair no probs!

CB Chairman said...

Then ... YES PLEASE!!!

Phil, you're a braver man than I am, winding up Mr C. I've got no doubts that he''ll make you pay for it in one way or another.

Haven't been far Shaun, I've gone for about 2 months now without reading a book and I've suddenly re-kindled my appetite. Currently reading one about HMS Gloucester.

Arby said...

Got some more exams next Thursday, so I've been doing a bit of revision as well.

Baltipal said...

Hi Roy, I'm reading a corker at the moment about a Long Range Desert Group mission during WWII to kill Rommel called, unsurprisingly, 'Killing Rommel'.

Arby said...

I saw the thread about that Steyr. Seems a bit wishy washy don't you think?

CB Chairman said...

My mistake Roy I should have jumped straight in.

Arby said...

Can't remember what it was called (the Last Vulcan, I think) but well worth reading. It's about the initial bombing raid on the Falklands fom the Ascention Islands. The Vulcan, which was by then obsolete, undertook an almost suicidal, but successful, mission far in excess of it normal operating range and involving numerous in-flight refuellings, in atrocious weather, with equipment scavenged from other aircraft types, whilst maintaining the element of surprise. I think it was the furthest bombing mission of all time and should not have been possible. An amazing story.

Phil_G said...

D'oh, you've gone and mentioned it.

Arby said...

Shaun. I meant that the selling process looked to be a bit wishy-washy and strange.

CB Chairman said...

I remember the story Roy, I believe that some of the pilots risked ditching their planes

Arby said...

Had a little session at Millride today and found that at 50/55 yards my groupings seemed to be better without that b****y big cap over the filler valve. Unless someone has something I could use in its stead, I may have to shoot "bare valved" over the weekend. Any thoughts, anybody?

CB Chairman said...

I know you did Roy it's Phil making extra effort to wind me up ... but I'll not bite

I might punch and kick but not bite!

Arby said...

Yes Shaun. The plane that actually made the run was the reserve, and on more than one occasion delays in meeting the refuelling craft meant it was running on empty. It was flying through thunder storms as well. I think I'll read it again.

CB Chairman said...

Is it because the cap makes the front end too heavy?

Phil_G said...

Roy, Jonny D or Mick Tromans could make you a small light cover.
In the short term, maybe a plastic bag and elastic bag would suffice to keep any contaminant out.

Arby said...

Think so. It's possibly logical when you think about it. The previous owner was taller and more wirey than me and had the hamster further forward. In adapting it to fit my unique shape the balancing point would probably have changed. Does this sound a reasonable possibility?

CB Chairman said...

yes, could you add weight to the rear of the rifle?

Phil_G said...

Seems to be a very happy Belgian with an EV2.

Arby said...

I'll need to experiment further. It could be that I remove the cylindrical weight from the hamster and add it to the existing 2 in the rear stock. I don't want to do too much all in one go, because I haven't tried it with standing shots yet.

Baltipal said...

Did he mention what the FT scene was like in Belgium at all Phil?

CB Chairman said...

a freezer bag would do for Sunday Roy.

Good to see you fostering happy Euro relationships Phil.

Arby said...

It must have been a relief to have completed the deal, Phil.

I completed the sale of Pat Byrne's FTX scope this week, on behalf of his wife. It went to the husband of the woman I sold mine to.

Arby said...

It could be us that need the freezer bag Shaun. Metcheck is forecasting temperatures of about 22 degrees for the afternoon session.

Phil_G said...

No he didn't mention the scene in Belgium.
Ben, they young lad who picked it up for him did say Air Arms guns are expensive and in short supply in Belgium and Holland, hence the often deals to buy from the UK.

Phil.J said...

Roy when in the Gulp we had to fit condoms on our barrels to prevent sand getting up them. May be an idea......

Phil_G said...

reminds me of the old joke about the organ grinder

Phil_G said...

Hi Phil

Phil.J said...

Good evning to you to. Has this become the Steyr Forum.....

CB Chairman said...

Evening Phil how was Turkey?

Arby said...

Phil, welcome back. Got no condoms. Perhaps I could get a "morning after" pill instead. Anybody else got any, the flavour's not important.

You used to shoot through them though didn't you? I'd be needing something a little more robust for my personal use.

Phil.J said...

The turkey was great, but roast spuds still hard in the middle.... Nice to see some good results in my absence at ICNI....

Baltipal said...

CB Chairman said...

Arby said...

Isn't that one of those desert head scarf thingies. You see a lost of them in Woverhampton.

CB Chairman said...

How do you know they're lost?

Arby said...

Arby said...

That's why Greg wants one....because he's always lost.

Shocking!

CB Chairman said...

Evening all!

Greg, I hope you got Trudy sorted. Good shooting today mate, well done!

I'm off to Angels and Demons. Blog ya later if anyone's still up.

Baltipal said...

Evening all.
I managed to turn up to a click checking session with no pellets, typical of me. So range checking was a case of 'Two or three close together then the clicks must be right' type of thing! The day was saved by the inimitable Jonny D who stayed behind & bailed me out with a tin of lead.
I have to say that without the help I get from my fellow shooters & Millriders I doubt I'd be still shooting. Ian has sorted my rifle out, Shaun is always there with a helping hand, Phil J lent me targets on cardboard & there was Jon with pellets he wouldn't take any money for, you lot are just amazing!!!!
Anyway, try as I might I could not make any difference to my clicks at various ranges. 8, 9, 11 & 12 were through the same hole, 35 & 40 were finger nail groups but 55 were all around the roundel target Phil had given me. Some high the next maybe wide then low but it wasn't till I walked back to the target that I appreciated that the roundel was KZ sized so most would have been knockdowns & the rest splitters! I decided the variation was due to my poor technique & tried again paying more attention to form & got it so that the pellets were impacting around the bull which couldn't have been bigger than a cm so not the single ragged hole of a Jonta zeroing session but good enough for me!
I go to tomorrow's Competition sticking by my existing clicks, only the end of play will tell if I've made a mistake!

Baltipal said...

Red Tube was very rude indeed & I advise everyone to avoid it!

CB Chairman said...

how long did it take you to decide?

Arby said...

I,m back; duty done.

I'll have to take another look at Red Tube so that I've got something to talk to Greg about tomorrow. It's only polite.

Very sad news that Garth from Rough Wedge has passed away.

Arby said...

Very sad news. He was one of the unsung characters. Tough times at Rough Wedge recently.

JONTA said...

Yes very sad indeed, Popped round Maureens today who told me about sad news of yesterday.
This upset her again especially as the circumsatnces were very familiar to her own loss.

Baltipal said...

Hi all. Yes, before the blog changes I wanted to add my sympathies as well. It was certainly striking how similar the circumstances were to Pat's passing.

CB Chairman said...

Hi guys I didn't know Garth but it sounds tragic and I wish his family well.

I'm afraid I'm having trouble with the new blog so please excuse the changing size of the font.
