Season Finale

The final GP of the season took place at Sywell near Northampton. This is the traditional end venue and it offers excellent facilities including a lot of space to accommodate the prize ceremony and the end of season raffle.
Sywell is famed for its wind and today would offer a severe test. The course consists of a three sections. The first is open grassland and although the wind was strong it was, to a degree, consistent. Next was a garden area, here the wind was switching and swirling and flags, indicating wind direction, showed it was going left and right at the same time! The third section was "the bank of death", here targets were placed at varying heights and the wind was blowing a hooley. The strong wind gusted up the slope of the bank and lifted pellets well above the killzone.
Of the five competitions the winner of B grade and SFT had already been determined. The C and A grade winners were still uncertain and the big one could still be won by a number of shooters.
The last 2 seasons had seen the Sywell GP won with scores of 43 and 42. Today's conditions suggested that a score close to 40 would probably win the day.
Here's Andy Gillott negotiating the bank; he posted an impressive 36 to further his challenge for the overall title.Roger shows off his kneeling technique.
Big Neil bags a pair on his way to 36 to tie for third on the day and 6th overall.
The morning session was topped by Andy Calpin who scored an impressive 38 to lead by 2. It looked like this score would not be troubled by the afternoon shooters as the wind seemed to increasing in ferocity. Dorian Falconer came close with a 37 but the day was to belong to Mr Calpin.
So to the award of trophies and the end of season mega raffle with lots of prizes on offer; many thanks to Napier for the sponsorship of the GP series.
Kate Green won a shoot off to claim her first piece of FT glassware; third in C grade. In her excitement Kate unfortunately dropped her newly won brandy glass. As soon as Mr Calpin received his then he offered it to Kate, what a gent!
Paul Schofield won A grade with an excellent 35 which was 1 more than Dave!
After the day's trophies were awarded it was on to the overall placements for the season.
Congratulation to Brian Samson who dominated the SFT class.
Piston class was a two way contest between Nick Murphy and Marc Fisher, both had won four of the previous eight rounds. Nick triumphed today and added the Piston title to the British Championship he won in April.
Ian Harford had started the season with 3 rounds of SFT before constructing six strong rounds to comfortably win C grade. Second place went to Roy Boliver, well done Arby!
Simon Higgins came top in B grade after an impressive first GP season. Tenth place belonged to Baltipal!
Midway through the presentation we were treated to some overhead aerobatics which temporarily took everyone's attention.
Ian Stoddart had a brilliant season and won A grade at a canter, Ian c'mon!
Karl Clarke finished 6th in A grade in his first GP season for many a year. And to the top man. British FT Champion Andrew Gillott.
It's been a great season and I daren't add up the miles that we have travelled. The grounds, the courses and the weather have all been variable but one thing has remained constant - we all had a great time.
So goodbye for a while, it's time for a blogging recess. Follow the adventures of the MFTA WL starting in October.

Incidently my first day at school involved a certain red headed girl with numerous stores throughout the Midlands. I cut her longggg pony tail off.

Hi folks,

Jon, Nice one will see you in Nov when your ready.

Ian you out there???????.

CB Chairman said...

Evening all, any news today?

I had frustrating day due to my scope. After a few shots it would start shooting to the right. Happy with the gun but need to solve the scope problem.

Arby said...

What scope were you using, Shaun? Greg stayed on tonight to get to grips with Ella, but he did feel as though he was going in the right direction.

CB Chairman said...

Hi Roy, I'm using a BSA 8-32 x 44. I really like the optics but am convinced something is wrong. When I zeroed it this week it would then start to shoot right and this is what happened today.

Arby said...

When it starts going right, is it the odd one, or a series? Do you suspect that either the scope is moving or the reticule isn't?

Arby said...

Bit of a sickener for Blues today. When I started listening towards the end they seemed the most likely to win it.

CB Chairman said...

No once it goes it stays and maybe gets worse. I hope its movement in the mounts. I am looking at a single piece mount but first I have e-mailed some springer boys for their views.

CB Chairman said...

I'd have been very happy with 1-1. Now I have to pray that Fulham turn Villa over. A draw for Wolves ok but that would be a game that you're targetting 3 points.

Arby said...

The worry for me with Wolves is that although they picked up a number of new players there doesn't seem to be too much quality in depth, and although 4 pts from 4 games doesn't look too bed there's going to be a time when they might lose 4, 5 or 6 on the run.

Arby said...

Freudian slip? Bad

CB Chairman said...

Gone to the cinema, blog later.

Jon said...

Greg you back yet?

Baltipal said...

I have returned, HURRAH!
I stayed at the 'ride till 1910, working out clicks for ranges 8, 9, 10 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20 yards, then in 5 yard increments out to 55.
All went well till 45 yards then I couldn't get a group & then by 55 yards the light in the Wood started ti fail & seeing the board became an issue so although I feel some confidence, it's not without qualification.
I'm not totally convinced the riser blocks will be of great benefit especially as there doesn't appear to be that big a difference in clicks for the longer ranges i.e. 10 clicks for 45 yards compared with 18 on my old card & 30 clicks for 55 compared with 40 but Ella is easier to handle compared with Trudy & if I fiddle with the Wegu & maybe the Cheekpiece height things might get even better.
It proved to be a long, tireing & frustrating day for me, I feel quite knacked now!

Ian C,mon said...

like i said your clicks are very simular to mine, wats clicks for 10 yrds

CB Chairman said...

Hi all!

Greg I find the riser blocks help with my head position.

Jon said...

He has returned no wonder you are tired.
Should have took you 20 mins tops.
You dont lose any clickies as such at longer ranges because your two zeroes will now be further away. The dialling as was to now to be subtracted.

The 2nd rail on mine effectively knocked two clicks off at 55 but zero now is 25 and 30 of which was 1 click on = 1 click less.

Baltipal said...

Yes, like I said it makes her feel more comfortable, I just imagined there's be a more dramatic effect on the clicks. I'm glad I got away from the whole positive/negetive thing with the turret!

Jon said...

Whats that +/- with turret?

Baltipal said...

10yards=80 clicks Ian.
That was the only query really, by the time I got to the longer ranges I was a bit frayed at the edges but I could not make 45 yards more than 10 clicks but 50 yards jumped up to 20. You both made it around 15 for 45 so I'm wondering if I'm entirely correct, like I said, 'Qualified confidence'.

Jon said...

Sounds about right if the scope tracks ok.

Arby said...

Evening Brethren. Tonight I've looked at the calendar and discovered that we're due at my Daughter's next weekend so I'll probably have to miss Newbury. J isn't here at the moment, but I think I've probably had to change too many arrangements already this year to be able to get out of it.

Jon said...

The BSA and Niko scopes i had played funny things after 42 to 47 same as 7 Tascos.

Baltipal said...

Jonny, I found I was going past my '0' position on my top turret & round the other way as the range got longer. Shaun re-positioned my turret cover at a new zero point so I'm going just one way.

Jon said...

Thought it may have been but had to ask. Cant see why anyone in the right mind doesnt do this.

Jon said...

Ian Cross Guns i feel demonic tomorrow.

Baltipal said...

Roy runs in fear of the all new Baltipal/Ella tag team, YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE ROYSTON!!!!!!

Arby said...

Greg, what it all boils down to is who I'm LEAST frightened of.

So, you were taking pity and giving me a chance to catch up by not shooting today? You're just setting me up for the kill aren't you? This shooting brings out your nasty side doesn't it.

Baltipal said...

I must say I liked the look of that close high one near the top, I wish I'd had a crack at that, was it tricky or easy peasy?

CB Chairman said...

Not the cinema, watched Meet Dave with the kids.

Don't know what the fuss is about, this is Greg's normal behaviour.

Jon said...

Yes but Balts all the down and outs congregate down them.
Think that Tesco geezas telling porkies.
The oldest club was Stourvale Woodsmen in Gornal formed by Ivan Hancock and some other geeza well before knock downs were invented. I was a member from 91 to 93 after the break away Black Country Marksmen (super club.)

Ian C,mon said...

or just dia talkin

Arby said...

Good God. He's "speaking in tongues" now.

Jon said...

Near enough same range as the other two Balts, 1/2 yard tops.

Baltipal said...

We need a real high close one to force the angle, they have one at Furness Mill, I love those shots. Do you remember it Arby?

Arby said...

Yes, perched on top of a telegraph pole but only a few yards in distance. A real gut wrencher.

That brings back good memories of two very enjoyable visits.

Jon said...

Anything on Monday?

Cross Guns tomorrow luv playing them plinkers up.

Baltipal said...

Baltipal said...

Virgin is absolutely W$£K!!! I can't send my click chart to Paul to print off as the mail just keeps showing an error, I mean honestly, what use are they????
Can some kind soul please print me off a suitably sized Click Chart using these details?
Many thanks in advance;

8 yards = 140
10 yards = 110
12 yards = 80
13 yards = 50
15 yards = 25
16 yards = 18
18 yards = 14
20 yards = 4
25 yards = 0
30 yards = 0
35 yards = 4
40 yards = 8
45 yards = 10
50 yards = 20
55 yards = 30

Jon said...

Balts, that dont look right.

Arby said...

I'll do it Greg. do you want me to email it to you, or print and laminate it and put it in the post?

Baltipal said...

Sorry Ian, Fridge/Freezer shopping. I didn't think there would be a Shoot on so promised Mom we'd do the White Goods tour.

Jon said...

Sussed it Greg, you are 5 yards out over 45 ie 50 dialling is 45, 55 is 50, etc.

Baltipal said...

I can't print Roy, that's why I was trying to mail Paul, Bloody Virgin!
I have a lamenator but it can't be too big, if it fits in the back of my pouch I'd be a happy man.

Jonny, doesn't suprize me mate, I fully expect several versions before I settle on one that works, that's what happened last time anyway.

Baltipal said...

I sat there for 30 minutes shooting at 45 Jonny, I could not make it more than 10 clicks!

Jon said...

Seems after 40 yards Greggy, 3 clicks for 5 yards! Should be more like 10 assuming it tracks proper 1/8". My asian pieces of junk didnt.

Sounds like your scope height is similar to mine any way but you are running at least 20ft/sec faster.

Arby said...

Tell me how big you want it Greg and I'll use my desktop publishing program. Or. you could wear it round your neck like I do.

Ian C,mon said...

my 40-5
45-10
50-20
55-30

Baltipal said...

Like I said right at the top, I had a right game at 45 yards & beyond, simply would not group. Ian & Shaun had a play on the plinkers & both made different clicks for 45 & 55.

Shaun had 45 yards at 15, 50 at 20 but 55 at 25, I think. Ian had 55 at 34 clicks. The light was going & I was fading fast as well so time will tell, I fully expect to have to ammend this chart.

Jon said...

Either wind was causing them to rise or you may have been misled by the stumps.
25 and 30 zero
35 2
37 3
40 4
42 1/2 6
45 9
47 1/2 12
50 15
52 1/2 18
55 20
57 1/2 23

Double up for 1/8" and you wont be far out.

Ian C,mon said...

how come your all still awake

Baltipal said...

Night all, Ian made me feel tired talking about bed.
Good shooting tomorrow, remember to come on here to tell us about it tomorrow night.

Jon said...

You mean tell you how i annoyed em.
Should be the Harriers crew there inc Stu, Kev etc

Phil_G said...

Morning chaps. Had to dash of yesterday as Mandy was having problems with her car. Report was that it wouldn't start, but it turned out to be the spring in the ignition barrel had gone, so the key would turn and the car would start but it wouldn't 'spring' back to stop the starter motor from spinning.
Managed to get it out and get a replacement from the scrap yard and get it fitted. Then off to a 60th B day party last night, so was really on the clock.
Just about managed to spend enough time to reset the MV yesterday after the Jonta stripdown. He and Gary think I need a new hammer, this new Harry Preston design is too thin in the middle and seems to be flexing.
Going to fit the new mounts now so all clicks will need recalculating.

Phil_G said...

Jon, do you know anyone who does anodising? Might just put the carbon tape on, but quite fancy a bit of blue anodising.

Baltipal said...

Morning Phil, did you shoot yesterday mate? I didn'y see you after our brief conversation at the begginning.

Phil_G said...

No Greg, once I got the air cylinder off Jonny D, I only had enough time to set the MV, then I got the call to say the Renault was crook. Was always on the clock anyway as I had the B day party to go to. 2 weeks of no shooting now :(

Baltipal said...

Oh dear. How was the MV then?

Phil_G said...

it was really low to begin with as we didn't measure the position of the adjuster before we took it out, so John only re-positioned it by eye.
I quickly got it back to somewhere close and got it to low 770's where I'm quite happy. It also seemed more consistent than it has been. John suggests I need a new hammer anyway as the HP design is a bit poo.

Baltipal said...

IT'S HAMMER TIME!!!!!!
Sorry 'bout that, couldn't resist.

Well, my Mother & I are back from our Fridgefreezer foriging expedition & I am predictably annoyed at just how difficult it is to buy anything even with the cash in your back pocket!
It surely can't be the case that the only places you can buy White Goods are Curry's or Comet! They only seem to sell Beko & with the limitation we're working under for size it's one model of Beko.
Mom doesn't like Beko, I didn't particularly care but now I feel herded towards it, my natural obstinacy is kicking in & I refuse to buy or even look at another bleedin' Beko!
There must be, somewhere out there, a large retailer of White Goods we can visit & peruse. What about all the other makes, the Zanussi's, the Daewoo's, the Indesit's, the Hotpoint's, someone must sell 'em!

CB Chairman said...

Hello Greg, should've gone to Far Coley!

Phil_G said...

why, are they selling them there?

Phil_G said...

300

CB Chairman said...

There's lots of white goods there!

Phil_G said...

did you venture into a decent county from the inner city jungle today?

Phil_G said...

all latest scores should now be online (excluding yesterdays of course)

CB Chairman said...

I went to Birmingham. Does that count?

Phil_G said...

nope

Phil_G said...

how was the close & high reducer, target 21ish?

Phil_G said...

Shaun, you'll love this site on so many levels. Full of data and in Spanish to boot.
This page is of particular interest to me, the Steyr diagram is much better labelled than the one on the oficial Steyr site!

http://www.azcft.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=110&Itemid=53

Phil_G said...

Has Greg exploded in indignation?

CB Chairman said...

Target 21 and 25 proved successful. Will try that site later Phil as I'm having computer issues

Phil_G said...

there are no such things as 'computer issues', just people who don't know what they're doing.

CB Chairman said...

thank's for your confidence

Phil_G said...

have we all gone?

Baltipal said...

No, I'm back. Just been watching Carry on Cowboy, they way be groan worthy but you can't help laughing!

Phil_G said...

phew, Greg you're OK. I thought your ire had overcome you and you'd gone on a rampage through the streets of Birmingham, mowing down electrical retailers in your path.

Baltipal said...

Never got to Brum, I did my rampaging through Solihull!

Phil_G said...

Greg, vis a vie the fridge freezer conundrum, do you have to view before you buy? You will get a much better deal on line. Give me your boundaries and we'll see what we can rustle up. size, price, colour, rating, make etc.

Baltipal said...

We want something abit solid & abit less plastic/flimsy Beko-ish, I was thinking along the lines of a Bosch.
It must be 152cm X 55 X 55, though we may get away with 155cm certainly no bigger.
I've been on the Bosch site but they list no dealers in our area, despite me actually seeing Bosch appliences in John Lewis' in Solihull.
We would like to view first as it is the old lady's purchase rather than mine & she can take against stuff if it isn't EXACTLY what she is expecting!

Phil_G said...

does it have to be 55cm deep?
the BOSCH KGV24V01GB is £389 at Comet, where you could view it, but you can get it from Argos for £323.06 and it is 156cm high x 55cm wide but its 61cm deep

CB Chairman said...

evening all!

Greg are you calm now?

Baltipal said...

DEADLY CALM SHAUNIE, disturbingly still!!!!!!

Phil, it's kind of you & all your help is appreciated. If you can find me a dealer atleast I'd be chuffed but I have to say Comet may say they are a Bosch dealer, the bloke I spoke to today in Shirley said he could get me a Bosch but their shops certainly don't have them on the floor to view, they have Beko's instead!!!!!

CB Chairman said...

Apollo 2000 in Redditch

Is it safe to come on? Is Greg still one of these?

"I'M A PREDITOR, A LONE WOLF, A SWOOPING RAPTOR OF DEATH, I LIVE TO CRUSH MY ENEMIES & HEAR THE LAMENTATION OF THEIR WOMEN!!!!!!!!"

are these any good?

Baltipal said...

Been there already matey, they actually list places I've been today as dealers that have probably never had a Bosch in.
Curry's & Comet, there must be another option!
I'll even dare to travel to the dreaded .......REDDITCH, URGHHHHH!!!!!
........but if you never hear from me again, think only kind thoughts!

CB Chairman said...

If you're going on such a deadly mission can you leave Ella at my house please?

Phil_G said...

well the higher mounts have made the head position feel much more comfortable.
Just need some stainless screws now.

Ian C,mon said...

yes you do

Phil_G said...

Mr S, how the devil are you?
Am I the only one going to work tomorrow?

CB Chairman said...

Work! Is that what you call it?

are you well mate . and yes you are

Phil_G said...

it's not what I call it for public sector employees.

Is that some kind of euphemism for sex Ian?

Ian C,mon said...

no my daughter is very close to giving birth. and i`m on my 4th cider

Baltipal said...

She's not giving birth there is she? I'd stay off the cider incase they need towels or something!

Shaun, how does one get onto the profiles section of FT Adventure?

CB Chairman said...

1) Be nice to me
2) send me a photo
3) Answer the same questions as me, Greg and Neil
4) Be nice to me

Phil_G said...

2 and 3 I can do. 1 and 4 may be a problem.

Ian C,mon said...

Baltipal said...

Anyway Ian, what happened at FC today, lets attempt some discussion about shooting atleast!

Phil_G said...

Shaun, did I tell you what a difficult job i think teachers do?

Ian C,mon said...

Willbe said...

Hiya all :)

CB Chairman said...

Okay Phil send the info

CB Chairman said...

Evening Will, FC today?

Baltipal said...

Ooh! We need a report from Jonny D then, I think he was going over there today.
What did you get then Ian?

CB Chairman said...

I have sent off for a 1 piece mount.

Baltipal said...

Hi Will, I see you suffered the oxhide hat in Egypt!

Willbe said...

Fraid not today so cannot report a great deal, only that if you get caught out in the rain on a honda fireblade you're going to get wet!

Willbe said...

Nope Greg that was the mesh and canvas bahmah i was on about to you, a cracking peice of kit in 40C+ egyptian sunshine fella!

Baltipal said...

Going out in the wet on a high speed two wheeler is frankly, dangerous.....are there no buses?

Baltipal said...

A damper mount Shaun, what of the scope, still functioning I trust?

Phil_G said...

I didn't have a problem with 2 piece mounts on my TX.
Do you have the recoil pin engaged in the breech?

CB Chairman said...

No the mount was recommended by our friend Mark Brewitt. As for the scope, I don't know yet.

Willbe said...

Not my first choice of sunday activities too Greg but was duped by that leviathon called the met office, was ok til 3pm then the weather gods turned! Saying that, good practice though as ppl come unstuck in the rain on bikes generally because they dont know how to ride in the wet.

CB Chairman said...

Yes to the pin.

Baltipal said...

Do you think Ian has just become a Grandad?

Jon said...

Yo peeps.

Phil theres one towards the end of Queen st Walsall. WS2
Another change of ownership and back on cash jobs.

Baltipal said...

What pellets do you use Will?

Ian C,mon said...

not yet o ring has`nt blown yet

Phil_G said...

Jon, is it LB Parkes, down by the railway station?
If so, I know them. I'll contact them.

Jon said...

Sorted the fridge out Balts?

Recommend these, http://www.appliancesonline.co.uk/ various retail shops around but got a Bosch cooker and DeDietric hob about £600 cheaper than Lewis.
Went to the Northampton shop.

550mm wide is a standard. Some of the cheaper Bosch are made in Spain and South America, the dearer ones usually made in Germany.
All fridges are plastic nowadays inc our gerry Bosch that the hinges and handles break.

Shame Miela dont do anything must have had a washer 8 years now, 3 times longer than all other respectable jobbies.

Willbe said...

4.52 jsb exacts (8.44grn) Greg, want a batch number fella? lol

Ayup Jon, whats that all about then?

Shaun/Gents anyone got any pics of me they can send to me on willbe_@hotmail.com

Baltipal said...

Did you go to Xguns Jon, what happened?

Jon said...

Phil dont go to Parkes, min charge in 1994 per colour was £75 + vat.
Its the other side where CLS Glaze is or was.
Turn left at Manor lights, third rd on the right rings a bell. Its on the right towards the end.

Willbe said...

Got a Bosch Logixxx here (baught about a year ago) and......it's german! :D seems ok too, nothing fell off and we find the pull out draw system a lot better than the shelves you normally find

Baltipal said...

Miela do mate, great big f/off walk in jobbies, could get a family of Albanians in there no trouble, though they might object I suppose!

I've got my eye on a KGV24V01GB, 155cm high so should fit. Can't wait to get the thing so I don't have to talk about it anymore!

Where'd Royston go? He came, he saw, he buggered off!

Jon, is the company called Majestic,
in Queen Street?

Phil_G said...

I assume Bob the Builder is busy fixing it.

As bad as FC caught me out 5 times, 43 mile wasted journeys.
Last twice been to Cross Guns its not been on.
Was a printed A4 sheet saying no shoot today due to break in and needed to cut the lock out so cant get in.
Had a butchers, was correct. Stu and TC had phone calls before going to Harriers so alerted what they knew.
Even so 28 mile round trip but better than a 43 mile round trip to FC.

No one ever goes to Penkridge then, no matter how desperate to shoot?

Jon said...

Bob the builder aint phoned for about two months.

Was called Majestic at one time, just turn up could be greeted with a milf.

Any way Millrides 2nd ground was at Acton other side of the canal woods up to 2000 poss 2001. 2nd best ground in the Midlands held the 1999 Midland GP there with just three of us! DP, ENoakes did side shoot and me.

Jon said...

I used to know a few milfs around Wombourne.

Baltipal said...

I only went to Penkridge the once, early on when we first started. I remember there was a huge Aberdeen Angus Bull on the other side of the river we were shooting across, that seemed object to us being there, made me wonder how on Earth they put the targets out & how they thought they were going to get them in?
Got a nice bacon sarnie though.......then I fell into the river while having a pee!
I wonder why I don't go there more often? Tony always asks us to when we go in!

Willbe said...

ohhhh errrr Jon, will be asking for more info next time I see you!

Jon said...

No not that crap hole the shoot was Acton Trussel.

Jon said...

I dont regard that one Balts as a shoot. Top whack on plinking 35 yards cant be bothered to use real targets.
